The Jakarta Post: House of Karma combines opulent enthusiasm with a rebellious spirit

Bali has long been one of the most sought-out travel destinations for visitors to Indonesia. From sandy white beaches to beautiful mountains, the Island of the Gods is famous for its breath-taking backdrop, further complemented with its own unique culture, making it the perfect place to take a step back from reality and succumb to relaxation.

Of course, the establishments on the island are gripped in a competitive business, from luxurious villas to extravagantly lavish hotels and resorts. The government has designated areas south of the island to be tourism central; home to Indonesia’s largest and most luxurious resorts.

While Bali has a little bit of everything for every kind of traveler, research by the National Development Planning (Bappenas) Ministry, concluded that 75 percent of people who go to Bali are within the age group of 15 to 65, with 24.7 percent occupying the 65 and over group and 23.6 percent under 15 years of age. Nakula Hospitality Management noted that the most common age group of Bali tourists is between 25 and 44 years old, with Australian tourists being among the strongest forces driving its tourism.

Charlotte Spence, an Australian native familiar with the hospitality industry in Bali, is hoping she can elevate the voices and standards of the young people on the island with her new House of Karma program that is expected to take the world by storm, way beyond the shores of Indonesia.

The group is defined as a space for young, aspirational “luxury rebels” and “pampered vagabonds” to connect through out-of-the-box adventures, immersive experiences and lavish events across the globe, connecting young travelers in Karma Group’s iconic destinations.

Playground for the Young and Free

“We turn Karma Group's 42+ stunning resorts into playgrounds for fun-loving, open-minded 'luxury rebels', inviting them to connect with like-minded travelers through experiences across the globe. We also bring that iconic Karma experience to our members in their home cities, through exclusive events and opportunities such as immersive dining, networking events, boat parties, boot camps and more,” explained Charlotte.

Karma Group owns eight luxurious establishment in Bali spread throughout Ungasan, Sanur, and Jimbaran Bay. Arguably its most famous resort, Karma Kandara sits atop a clifftop in Bukit Peninsula, known globally as “Billionaire’s Row,” offering guests direct access to a stunning beach.

Meanwhile in Gili Meno in West Nusa Tenggara, Karma REEF offers the experience of an almost untouched idyllic island, where guests are treated in beautiful beachfront bungalows or luxurious safari tents. These are just some examples of the playground of House of Karma members.

Born out of the love for travel, spontaneous connection and meeting new people in general, House of Karma attracts young people to have a sense of belonging everywhere they go, outside of their private hotel rooms or villas. Buildings may be built on the basis of being a home-away-from-home concept, but ultimately, people are what can make even the strangest places on Earth feel familiar and safe.

“House of Karma is for all those pampered young vagabonds who love luxury travel but also want to have fun with it and meet interesting people wherever they go. We are all about building a sense of connection on our travels and immersing ourselves in the culture we find ourselves in at any given time. We believe in that 'detox, retox, repeat' lifestyle - combining wellness and partying for the ultimate balanced life, and finding a community wherever we are in the world. That is what House of Karma is all about!” Charlotte continued about its mission and vision.

    Luxury Rebels Unite

People might wonder; what exactly is a “luxury rebel” and “pampered young vagabond”?

As Charlotte, a self-proclaimed luxury rebel, put it, they are simply someone who wants to travel and live out of the box but who also is not ashamed to say they love a little luxury. Just because someone is an adult, does not mean they have to be tied down to responsibilities and stay in one city their whole life. House of Karma invites people who are young at heart to explore more and come back with memories of adventures that will last a lifetime.

“I'd say that our launch event in Bali earlier this month was a perfect example of this - we enjoyed massages and IV infusions, long, St Tropez-style, lobster-filled lunches […] and then danced all night barefoot and reckless in the sand,” she said, describing one of the most recent events.

More events to look forward to include a boat party on the Nile, a ski week in Germany, a “detox retox retreat” in Bali, and a glamping week on Gili Meno. This is of course in addition to wellness days, networking events, pop-up parties and immersive dining experiences for all members of House of Karma, taking the phrase “Work Hard, Play Hard” to new heights.

As founding managing director, Charlotte herself has a deep love for travel instilled from a young age. Growing up with Karma Group founder John Spence as a father, she knows how important it is to have curated experiences. As someone who has cycled through France, tried the best curries in India, and sampled sangria and tapas in Barcelona, exposed to so many local cultures all over the world, she is not afraid to carve her own path and let others have a chance at the adventures she has been so fortunate to have had.

“I think it really is about the people you're with and the way you resonate with the culture, and that to me is the beauty of curated experiences and what we do through House of Karma! I want our members to immerse themselves in the experiential side of life, and meet a whole host of wonderful people along the way,” she said.

Welcome to the House of Karma

Charlotte revealed that Bali’s Karma Kandara had the pleasure of hosting the launch party earlier this month, kicking off the event with everything from Bloody Marys, IV infusions and sound healing to long lunches, pilates, beach parties and everything in-between to give attendees a taste of the House of Karma experience. Bali has always held a special place in Charlotte’s heart.

“I think there's just something about the spirituality of Bali that makes it such a beautiful place to spend time. There's a calming energy that hits you as soon as you arrive and keeps you feeling safe the whole time you're there. Plus, it really has a mix of everything; from the natural beauty of the waterfalls and volcano to some of the best spas, dining and nightlife this side of the world. Bali will always be one of my most favorite places, every time I go, I never want to leave!” she said.

Even an island as beautiful as Bali, is too small to be a playground, especially not when you have a whole world to explore! Founding memberships are affordably priced at only US$1,000, and include five nights free accommodation at any Karma Group resort. In addition, members will get 20 percent off for dining, spa and Karma Group room rates year-round, and invites to VIP events in their home city.

“It has been really exciting to see the response so far, and I've already met so many wonderful new people who are joining us! I think it just goes to show there are a lot of us luxury rebels out there and it's time for us all to connect,” Charlotte shared. “Honestly, as long as you're 35 or under and enjoy experience-driven travel, meeting new friends and fabulous events, then we'd love to have you! Whilst it is a member’s club, we want House of Karma to be an inclusive space for all to come together.”

If the launch party is anything to go by, House of Karma seems to be the start of something wonderful. Charlotte revealed that the response was so wonderful that they promised to look into creating a similar members-only “detox retox retreat” in Bali later this year, as well as the possibility of hosting some members-only nights in Jakarta and all over the world.

“I just want to reinforce that House of Karma is for you, wherever you are in the world or on your travels. We're not tied to one location, thanks to the beauty of Karma Group's many resorts and all the events we have planned for member cities across the world, so I'd really encourage anyone looking to make some wonderful memories to apply! I for one am really excited about the future of House of Karma, and I hope to meet many of you for a cocktail somewhere in the world soon,” Charlotte concluded.
